EU HORSE Project - Flexible Collaborative Robot Applications
LENS Living Lab is a collaborative partner of TCS - Toolmakers Cluster of Slovenia in the EU program HORIZONE 2020 funded partnering research and innovation project related to the development of a new generation of flexible collaborative robots for the needs of manufacturing SMEs ( http://www.horse-project.eu/). Beside new technical solutions HORSE project will develop and start up the initial network of Competence Centers as one of the instruments to facilitate the appropriation of new technologies in European industry. HORSE Centers of Competence (CoCs) will be established in four locations across Europe (F, NL, D and SLO), in order to simplify usage and facilitate access to robotics by European industry and especially first users SMEs.
CoC Slovenia Business Case
Competence center in Slovenia (CoC Slovenia) will be formed as a modern industry driven open research and innovation virtual organization.
The vision of CoC Slovenia is to become an integral part of the EU network of competence centers with the focus on advanced, flexible collaborative robotic systems for the needs of manufacturing SMEs.
The core partners of the CoC Slovenia are:
- TCS - Toolmakers Cluster of Slovenia:
- CoC Slovenia legal representative,
- Regional network of the manufacturing industry and R&D partners from different industries (toolmaking, machinery, automotive etc.),
- Project office services,
- Network of the Central, Eastern and South European industrial clusters
- ETRA Ltd
- Robotics system developer and integrator (KUKA, ABB, FANUC etc.)
- Operator of the CoC Slovenia Technology Demonstration Center
- LENS Living Lab - INTESO Group (SI, A, D, DK, India, SA, USA):
- Open research - innovation methodologies, systems and services,
- International open research and innovation program “Smart Machines & Systems”,
- Coordinator of the regional open research and innovation collaboration platform for robotics,
- The portfolio of the existing LENS Living Lab open research and innovation collaboration platforms (AALaseR, LogDyn, InnDEX, KM FEST, ICA etc.),
- ICT systems and services (3L ExArca, SITRAC etc.)
The core team partners will co-develop a business plan and sign the long-term consortia agreement to support performance and give a legal framework to this new competence centre in Slovenia. The final organization and the name will be formed and agreed during the second phase of its development.
In the first phase the CoC Slovenia architecture was developed (Figure 1) where the organizational framework of this virtual collaborative organization was identified. The CoC Slovenia is defined [1] as an organization created to support sustainable collaboration between industry, research and educational organizations, professional associations, representatives of public sector and other interested parties on the area of flexible collaborative robots for manufacturing SMEs.

This long-term collaboration will provide the access (One stop shop) to the regional and global information, knowledge base and services, technology providers and pool of virtual R&D resources. CoC Slovenia is embedded and supported by the technology collaboration platform coordinated by LENS Living Lab. This platform represents the collaborative working environment to support open research and innovation efforts on the selected areas of CoC Slovenia collaborative interests, supported by the appropriate organization of work and e-services. This platform has been established at this phase and is under development. It is available to all HORSE project partners and other regional and international stakeholders on this link: https://3lexarca.com/platform/570211f1b12b68c02cadc850/.

AALaseR - Laser Additive Manufacturing
Technology Collaboration Platform
Laser additive manufacturing technology is representative of the emerging Industry 4.0 key enabling technologies (KETs). Industry 4.0 and key enabling technologies are driving forces for the rethinking and restructuring of existing classical manufacturing industries and the introduction of new technologies supported by new work concepts. The holistic industrial innovations from this area needs, partnering and collaboration of partners from different domain as manufacturing technology, component and equipment providers, system integrators, high-tech entrepreneurs and research community (laser, metallurgy, sensors, electronics, internet of things and services, industrial engineering, management etc.).
With the world's leading developer and producer of laser AM technology equipment, a few LENS Living Lab network industry partners recently launched the international AALaseR - technology collaboration platform (AALaseR). The main mission of this technology collaboration platform is to support innovation and business partnering in this field. This will be done by joint development of different industrial applications and services for the needs of aerospace and automotive industry. The core business partners in this initiative are BALMAR, OPTOMEC and LENS Living Lab - INTESO Group.
